'Darenth' is a cycle of tone poems composed almost entirely of drones, tone-clusters and obsessive pulsating figures, given inner animation by means of subtle - and occasionally not so subtle - shifts in timbre, density and dynamics. This album contains the first three pieces in the cycle. They are scored for the organ, an instrument that appeals to me because of its kaleidoscopic tonal potential and limitless capacity to sustain sound, qualities that are exploited very fully in the music presented here.
I find landscapes particularly inspiring, as well as sounds - from any source - that seem to evoke the unseen world. When I saw the place-name 'Darenth' for the first time, on a signpost while travelling through north west Kent, England, a few years ago, my instant feeling was of things both slightly supernatural - or extra-terrestrial - and indistinctly sonic. I was very drawn by that feeling, and consequently produced this set of pieces.
